I don’t really know what to say.

You’re one of my best friends in the city, and a lot of memories of the past few years involve you:
- the day of the Hungry Individual, donut, and root beer float brunch
- the one and only Pista Face jersey design meeting at Uptown Juice Bar
- you showing up at my house with a waffle iron, and bringing canola oil and flour because you weren’t sure if I had any
- opening some beers on your wall-hanger Maietta, surrounded by unopened moving boxes in your new apartment
- walking Williamsburg and the LES when Summer came to visit
- the cork you tied to my saddle when I wasn’t looking
- you seeking out the Dunkin Donuts on our last Westchester ride after I subliminally spotted a Munchkins box in a trash can
- deciding the $3.50 cupcake was worth it at the last Bohemian beer garden visit
- lunchtime laps and food, including the day we met when I distributed the NYC fixed spokecards

Lots of good times, and I’m looking forward to more on your return. There’s a lot of people out here who miss you and we’re all pulling for you.

When you come back, you can throw my beer in Newtown Creek as much as you want. You can still blame it on Andras.

Gabe, wow… Mark and I went to the party that they had for you last night, and you know I don’t know that many of your NYC friends, so I asked a guy “How many people are here for Gabe’s benefit?” He looked around the crazy packed bar and estimated that about 80% of them consider themselves your friends! i met gabe when he was in kansas visiting his aunt laura and uncle randy…randy one of my closet’s friends called me and told me that gabe was visiting and brought his bike and wanted to know if there were any group rides going on here in leavenworth..i told randy there was one this am but he had missed it..i told randy that it had been about 5 months since i had been riding but i would call gabe and talk to him about riding..well within a 1/2 hour of the call we were on our bikes and riding through the rolling hills of kansas..so here i am almost 50 years old and have not been riding for some time, and gabe on a fixie..i knew this ride was going to be something..but gabe being the true kind heart person would smoke me up the hills then kind of wait for me to catch up to him, then another hill and well you get the picture…after about 23 miles we returned to our starting point. we both said great ride..me as i caught my breath..we put the bikes in my truck and i drove him back to randy and laura’s…gabe i just want to say you will get better.. and come to kansas again and pull this ol’man up these kansas hills.,,you are in my prayer’s

Gabe, I’ve been thinking about you a lot these past weeks and send positive energy your way every day. Sometimes it’s harder to write what one feels than to just feel it, so I’ll leave a quote from my oldest nephew who comes into the room shouts “Wake up!” at 6am in the morning when I stay at my sister’s house. He also jumps up and down on my bed until eventually achieving his desired objective. I went to a Jamm Session Sunday night in Santa Cruz. It was about removing the obstacles. hi.

yesterday, i met summer in a little thai place on haight. she asked me for advice on a diversion in the neighborhood, but as i am simply a wayward traveller myself, i had none to give.

her heart was heavy, and she carried the burden of sad acceptance in her eyes. when she explained why she was in the city, my heart ached for all of you.

(i shared some of this with summer, but i wanted to finish the story now with all of you)

my father was in a coma for several months after a car accident many years ago. i dropped out of school to be with him. i spent everyday, by his side. holding his hand, reading to him, explaining the little interpersonal dramas in the hospital… anything i could do to keep my connection with him…

i remember the exact smell of the hospital room, the pattern of the tile wall in the waiting room and the creeping way the sunlight snuck through the curtains the morning he opened his eyes.

his memories of the experience are fuzzy, dreamlike adventures. disjointed stories with the occasional connection to what was happening in my reality. my favorite of these connections was his ‘living’ a short story that i read to him about traveling cross country by train.

after he awoke, in the first few confused days, he recounted almost the entire story first hand. he remembered where they stopped along the track, eating on the train car, he even recalled the names of the other passengers (all names of nurses/therapists that worked with him daily).

as the years pass, he remembers less of the train trip, and more of the “reality”… the constant hum and beeping of machines covering most of the other noise. but he still remembers my presence, and the names of the hospital staff.

the months were some of the most difficult of my life, but also laid roots for the most profound growth and self exploration i’ve experienced.

to gabe’s family and friends,

i pray that you find strength and peace in yourselves and in each other.

and that you Really know that as devastating as this is… there will be just as much laughter, joy, love, and tremendous growth to come.

and to gabe,

my hope for you is that you are able to retain little glimpses of the journey you’re on. that when the time comes, you can share your stories and experiences.

and i hope that these well wishes from your friends (and the occasional stranger) stick with you and lighten your path home.

I am sure it’s a long process, but I hope that things will just keep improving and improving until you are fully back to your usual self. Between high life’s on the trestle and 4th of July in OOB we had some awesome times! Every year I retell the “hangin out in oob” story or every time I happen to find myself of the pier. I cant wait until we do the major updates, since communicating with all of you gives me strength, which I can then transfer to Gab.
I thank all of those who connect to the donation link, and I thank all of those who comment and support. Both are important, and appreciated more than you can imagine. Gabe had a great nurse today, covered with tattoos and shaved head, gave Gabe a great shave and put him in PJ’s rather than those goofy johnnies. Unbelievable care. Even Donna had an unplanned audience with the Mayor of SF and his chief of staff by Gabe’s room. Sweet!
Someone told me Summer has accumulated 18,256 cupcakes for a Gabe event in Maine. I wonder if there are any spinach cupcakes?
As I travel through this huge hospital, as I have for the past 3 weeks, people I have never met before send their love to Gabe.

It is amazing how the yong brain can heal – we were told that Matt’s brain could form new synapses faster than it could heal the damaged ones (that was 20 years ago, so science has advanced tremendously since then, I’m sure.) i saw this bike yesterday in downtown northampton that was locked, with a cable lock, around the rear rack. only the rear rack was locked.

tonight i saw my professor riding his bike with a funny hat on and his mustache sticking beyond the edges of it. he had a cute basket.

there’s a bike path that starts about two blocks from my house. it takes me across the connecticut river, through corn fields, farm lands, and streams, and all the way to amherst. it only crosses over streets 3 times!

these are just some pleasant bike moments i’ve had recently that i wanted to share with you. keep up the good work, gabe!

Hi Donna, I got in touch with a friend of mine from ME Medical Assoc. She works with the Emerg. Docs who in turn have many contacts thru Lifeflight of Maine. She had 3 questions: 1st and most annoying is if Gabe has insurance for this type of coverage, 2nd was what hospital he is in (we know that) and 3rd what facility are you looking at in Boston? She has brought up the question at their meeting which took place last night. I think they would be willing to help if you have not made other arrangements. Just let me know. Absolutely wonderful to hear of the move out of ICU – sometimes a downward move is actually a good thing. Gabe, you are incredibly fortunate to have all these friends – which you of course have earned, because that’s how we acquire friends – but you also appear to have an amazing family. You are guaranteed a good recovery for that very reason.

As someone who has watched a loved one (my precious niece) sit in a coma for 68 days (with no movement, eye openings, etc) I can say without reproach, even though Gabe needs the positive support, you guys are the conscious sufferers at this point. I wish Gabe all the luck he needs, but really, right now, I just wish I could hug you guys, and tell you how much I feel for what you are going through. BIG TEXAS HUG. Hang in there. He has come so far, and you guys are supported by all of us too. Gabe is loved, and let that love spill over into your lives.

It is beyond belief. I have been in Maine holding the extended family together, while Summer, Kierie and Donna have spent countless hours caring,overseeing,directing,worrying,researching,communicating,and so much more; while the Gabe Community has been tuning in and supporting in many different ways. The progress that my severely injured son has made these past
5 weeks is phenomenal. I saw Gabe the day after the accident, and I almost lost it. I knew he is strong, but I must
say I read and listened to every word all of you out there wrote and spoke. That kept me sane for the past weeks. I know D,S & K feel the same. Gabe has a long road ahead, and your involvement in his recovery is even more important now. There is little more important to a parent to see that his or her child is

I was so saddened to hear about Gabe. Gabe and I attended school together from pre-school to senior year. What a great guy! I was thinking back in Mrs. Duffy’s second grade class when Gabe and Tony, at snack time would take there pkg. of fruit snacks and smoosh them all together…roll them in a rainbow colored ball and eat them. Ill le Donna or Kierie take center stage with the main blogodome. I just flew back Sun nite from SF. Gabe’s eyes were open and gave me a good handgrip as I left his side. I ve been with him for a week and have seen changes in him. I look in his eyes, and yes, there is someone there! He is more alert for longer times, and responds better to his PT/OT and speech gurus.

cont’d. Good swallowing skills are a prerequisite to removing the trach and then the feeding tube. Then Gabe will be able to sit up and be in a wheelchair. That also assumes his pelvic x ray is ok.
So,while he has a very long way to go, he is making noticeable progress. The members of his alternative universe afre being heard.. Keep it up Thanks

Hi Gabe, I only met you twice. Once at Thanksgiving a couple years ago at my daughters house and then this past summer in Bangor, Pickering Square, a music festival. I know your sister thinks the world of you.

Gabe, good to read you are working hardand doing better! I know first hand what it is like to be trapped in your own head and have to learn incrementally to control and communicate with your body, and everybody, all over again. If you get frustrated just remember that it takes us at least the first four years of our lives to learn how to communicate well. Keep up the awesome work!

The radio waves and tv stations are all humming with broadcasts of Gabe and all of his supporters ; along with promoting events Thursday 11/5 at the Smith School in winterport and The Fork pub in winterport Sunday with 3 R&B bands performing. Summer did a great job when she was interviewed on TV, Donna and Kierie have been steering the actions on the west coast; Gabe has been performing in his own unique style, stronger each day, Even mouthed Happy Birthday to Donna, and so much more. I just read about you in a Transportation Alternatives email and wanted to drop you a line to offer some encouragement. I’ve been there. In 1997, six guys attacked me and left me for dead one day when I was working as a photojournalist in Sacramento. Like you, I had a brain injury and like you’re doing right now, I had to work as hard as I’ve ever worked on anything to get my life back. I can’t really describe to you how tough it’s going to be, but I can promise you that things are going to get better. They really do.

I just went for a nice ride in the wind and rain up to the Alpine climb this morning from Manhattan on the river road, but there was a time when I couldn’t even move around without a walker. Don’t ever give up. You will amaze yourself.

Hey Gabe,
You don’t know me pal, but I I send you healing spirit.. I live in the Bar Harbor area, and have a son who suffered a major brain injury in Sept 2007 while on his motorcycle. He spent a month on life support in ICU, did not talk for 2 and a half months, and spent almost 6 months at EMMC in Bangor getting super care. Dustin could not talk for nearly 3 months. There were no answers to alot of my questions, be we stayed positive and prayed alot. Here we are two years later, and Dustin just passed a road test so he can drive again, he walks fine, speaks fine, and his hand writing is better than it was before his injury. He works in the parts dept. where he was working before the accident, and is making progress every day… I see you have a huge support group, and with that, I can say for sure, you will be back to where you want to be with hard work and faith….”Never Give up, never give in, nothing is impossible” We have lived it too.. We are in your corner rooting for you along with all your great family and friends.. The future is yours my friend:-)

I sent the info about the Maietta bike raffle to all my cycling friends, none of whom know you either. I explained to them that their chances of winning a finely crafted, hand-built frame were going to be exponentially higher than their chances of winning the New York Mega Millions Lottery. I mean, probably they are. The truth is, I don’t know how many people have bought raffle tickets…

Have a nice Northern California kind of day and keep doing all the seemingly nonsensical stuff your therapists are asking you to do. Trust me, if you get good enough at it they’ll stop.

Checked in, and glad to see your recovery is going so well! Keep working those muscles and hope the trach can come out soon. When I couldn’t eat liquids/food I always enjoyed watching the food channel, I know it sounds weird, but worked for me. Once I could eat Pureed food, I learned that chewing can be way overrated and some items taste better pureed. Again, keep up the hard work and hope you get back east soon.

seeing kierie’s post today made me really, really happy. you look so good! we send summah off to san fran for a week in a few days, and will be sending many good vibes and most likely gifties with her. she is hosting the yearly yankee swaperoo tonight, and i have a gift that is extremely cheesy and awesome. though nothing beats the fireworks of 2007. we finally set them off this past summer. the subway sandwich and bag of chips in a powerbook box was pretty sweet too though. man i miss you. love to everyone.

Bonz, Tracy, Ben and I are up in Mt Rainier, Washington for few days. Typical Bonz action; he convinced us that a drive to the near top was an excellent idea……well we made it but witnessed a couple of tremendous accidents and lots of slipping and sliding! We all agree this trip would have truly been complete if you had been with us….some day you will!

after midnight Tuesday, Gabe, Kierie, Donna, all the gear and equipment, g with the Pilot of the Red Wing Shoe coporate jet, Chappy Aiken, Nurse Alan Friend and Red Wing crewmember Jim.left Oakland Cal headed for Boston, Mass. After a short refueling pit stop in North Dakota, the Red Wing jet landed in Boston where Gabe, Kierie & DonnA were transported by Ambulance to Spaulding Rehab Hospital. So many people gave their all to mae this happen, especially David Murphy, President of Red Wing Shoe co.who made the Jet and Pilot available gratis to us. I spent time on the phone with the Red Wing factroy rep Steve Perry, both of us in tears reflecting on
this journey. Thank you all, Thank you DAvid, Chappy and all those involved. You all will be in my heart forever. Am sure Donna and Kierie I am sure will post more. OMG this is unbelievable!

I finally recovered enough from my new knee surgery to make the short 4 hour trip to see Gabe, Donna & Kierie. I hadnt seen Gabe since before T’giving, and he had progressed so much I was overrun by tears of joy. I exclaimed “Gabe is back!” Not exactly the same, but he is on his way. Seeing his phenomenal response to visitors, Emily, Zak, me was beyond belief. I will be making the trip at least every other week. He needs it. It is fuel for his recovery. If you cant get there, cards.
Personal visits are best. Check with Donna and Kierie for details. Just rejuvinate him with your presence. Thank you all so much. Mike the Dad

Hello to Gabe, but more importantly to all of you who follow up on the comments and are thinking about visiting but haven’t yet! I wanted to share the awesomeness that I experienced during my visit to Boston last week and echo Donna’s call to visitors.
Before visiting Gabe, I had thoughts and concerns that might be similar to some that other friends may have. I was wondering what it was going to be like seeing one of my favorite people in the world struggling in a way that I can’t imagine. I was wondering if my visit was going to be a hindrance to all of the therapies necessary in his daily schedule. Was I going to be welcome? Who should I call to visit?
I put aside all those thoughts in the name of Gabe and I was very happily surprised to see him with bright, open eyes… and smiling… at me! I was invited to watch a physical therapy and I got to see the sweat forming on Gabe’s brow as he attempted to sit up on his own. Throughout the whole thing he would look over and give me the “see what I can do now?” look. I was definitely impressed!
Then we sat (Gabe sat up in his wheelchair) and had some quality one-on-one time in front of a huge window facing the city. Although it was hard to understand, Gabe was mouthing words to me a mile-a-minute.
If you’re wondering, “will he remember me?” the answer is yes, he most likely will. Tyler and I visited on Gabes birthday for the first time (I’ve been twice now) and we read all of the Facebook happy birthday wishes to Gabe. We told him who the post was from and asked him if he remembered that person. To our surprise, it was pretty much one finger for yes in every case. In fact, on my last visit Gabe said his first audible word out loud to me when I asked him, “Gabe, guess who’s coming to visit you tomorrow? I’ll give you a hint.. her name starts with an E” Gabe took a deep breath and within 5 seconds said “EMILY!”… ding correct!
Also fun, Gabe beat me in arm wrestling twice and he beat me three times in thumb wrestling over the course of the last visit.
I asked him if he wanted me to tell everyone hi from him and he gave me a big thumbs up so I told him I’d tell everyone to come visit… so go visit!!!

It was so obvious that not only are you on the road to recovery, but your legendary sense of humor has remained intact. Who else could make a joke using only one finger? I hope you haven’t broken your whoopie cushion yet. When Allison told me you knew who was coming and that it was me, I got quite verclempt. It was such an immensely positive and powerful feeling to know that you’re with us, and before we know it, you’ll be up and about and getting back to being your old Gabe self. I really can’t even put into words how great it was to see you. My thoughts always turn to you at least once a day – how you’re feeling, how you’re progressing, what you’re thinking behind those amazingly expressive brown eyes. Give a big high five or fist bump to Mom, Dad, Kierie and Summah for me. Zach and I will be down again in early March. We love you very much, and are incredibly excited to see you again!

Hi Gabe, Donna, and Kierie…It was great to see Gabe again after all this time and see that he is looking so good! I watched a PT or OT session where they are working on his fine motor dexterity but also helping his eyes to learn to focus properly. It was wonderful to meet Kierie and her mother and a number of Gabe’s friends. Dan, being Dan, was pretty focused on all of the trains but he and Jack were also amazed with all of Gabe’s progress. Gabe is doing a fantastic job and all of you who are working with him are doing a fantastic job too!

Hello everyone! The Boston Monsoon season seems to be over and it is now in the sunny sixties. Little yellow crocuses are blooming at 30 Victoria St. Gabe has been going out with visitors and will have to start wearing the Guiness hat with a brim that Jack and Din brought him a few weekends ago. Kaitlin had lunch with us yesterday and then it was out to blow bubbles on the train patio. I think 20 trains must have exited and entered North Station while Gabe, Kierie and Kaitlin used up every bit of bubble mix. Mike visits to today and gets to assist with the new puree menu. So far Spaulding has excelled at pureed pancakes and french toast, tomato florentine and broccoli cheese soup. We have had adventures thickening our Ginger Beer and blueberry soda. Hope they bring up the pureed garden burger while Mike has the meal duty. Drop in when you are in town…

My visit weekend of Mar 20 was unbelievable. It was 2 wks since I saw Gabe, and I noticed a marked difference in him. Quicker responses, sense of humor is evident, much stronger on right side, and left side still very weak, but improving. He put on his reading glasses, and was turning the pages and reviewing the Superbike motorcycle book I brought down. We played a dice/chips game, LeftRightCenter. Gabe won one, Kierie won one. I lost both. Sun night Donna, Kierie, Amy, Clare and I went out for Afgani food, and brought take out back for Gabe, which Donna will puree so he can enjoy. So, now Gabe needs visitors while he is in Boston. What a miracle man!!! Dont let him down.

For those of you following along We had a slight delay in the departure for Crotched Mt Rehab in New Hampshire. However, everything has come together once again and we are setting off for this little Camelot on Monday, April 12th. Gabe and I will go in an ambulance and Kierie will have all our Boston belongings including her bike in the red WIndstar van. We should be there around noon to start settling in.

Monday night 4/12 845pm I got a phone call. I heard in a weakened voice, but a voice none the less.. ” Hi Dad “. Gabe speaking to me from his new temporary digs in Greenfield NH at Crocheted Mountain Rehab. Donna, Kierie and Gabe arrived there at 2pm, and was settling in. Gabe’s bed is, as we expected, too short, but that will be resolved. So now he is on the next chapter of his rehab before he comes home. I see him every 2 wks or so, and I see noticeable change. a long way to go, but hes a fighter and am looking forward to real progress.. so keep on praying.. Thanks all

Gabe will be riding back to Winterport May 12 with Kierie at the wheel of his black 9′ tall awesome Van, adorned with license plates “FAJITA”. The 207 year old homestead has 2 easy access showers, sinks,ramps everywhere in and out, enlarged easy access doorways, new maple floors replacing the 200 year old pumpkin pine floors which have been removed, numbered and stored for future use. Specialized beds and equipment are on the way. An I Pad will be with him. The pantry will be stocked with veggies, fruits, tofu, pasta, cupcakes, juices, pancakes, eggs, avocados and more.
A “phone tree” is being established as a “go to” list for assistance and stuff.
Appointments, visits, therapy,smiles, hugs and so much more. so keep those prayers and well wishes flowing.. another chapter is coming, and Gabe is
reacting positively to it. Gabe is coming back!!! Whee!!!!

I enjoyed reading Mike’s comments…I want to thank Donna and Gabe for the wonderful visit I had with them at Crotched Mountain…What a beautiful facility! The tree house (wheelchair accessible) is amazing. It was especially good to see Gabe eating again and not pureed food but just about anything he wants, as long as it is soft or cut up into little pieces. I saw a great deal of determination by Gabe and Donna, helping Gabe to learn to drive his new wheel chair…all the way up to the tree house! Looking forward to seeing all of you (Gabe, Donna and Kieri) back in Maine!

Wonderful to know you are all together again in Maine and that Gabe is continuing to make great progress. We have been sweltering here in DC this summer and I can’t wait for the cool breezes of Maine in late August. Looking forward to seeing you all again in Winterport!

Gabe is pointed in the right direction, in his own way and own speed. AS Kierie says, it is comforting to have both Kierie and Gabe so close by, adding a sense of normalcy to this whole surreal event. Gabe’s bud, Androsh took a motorcycle trip from New Joysey to Bangor to spend 2 days with Gabe. These visits by friends are priceless. Andros stepped right up and helped Donna (and me), and won our hearts too. We all went to a July 4 cookout at Summer’s digs in Bangor, and Gabe has written simple letters to Kierie while she was on a one week bicycle trip to Cape Breton Island. Absence does make the heart grow fonder.
As trying as this whole scenario is, it has brought all of us much closer, and consequently much stronger, albeit a little tired, but that will resolve itself.
Gabe is on his I Pad daily, so e mail him. Cards too: Gabe Allen Brewer Rehab Center 74 Parkway so. Brewer Me 04412 Rm 102… Keep praying

Really enjoyed Kierie’s lastest post. Wonderful to see yet more evidence of Gabe’s progress and the great photos. Sounds as though you are enjoying Bangor, with theatre and restaurant trips, plus a visit to Bar Harbor. Can’t wait to see you all in late August!
